O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. The judges loved her voice and she advanced into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the third place again. With two other stunning performance on September 7 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two competitors, judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's history . O'Neil received a call right away from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
